John B. Sanfilippo & Son reported Q1 fiscal 2027 GAAP diluted EPS of $1.11, missing expectations on both earnings and revenue. The quarter marked the debut report for newly installed CEO Jasper B. Sanfilippo, Jr.
A 6.7% drop in Consumer channel volume pushed gross margin down to 17.0% from 18.1% a year earlier, with lower walnut, trail mix, and peanut prices compounding the pressure.
Contract Manufacturing volume rose 41.3% on a significant new snack nut customer, and management intends to lean into that channel to backfill lost Consumer volume. CEO Sanfilippo was direct that the shift will result in a less favorable sales mix. No quantitative guidance was provided for the remainder of fiscal 2027.

The company says a recently completed strategic consulting engagement reinforced its long-term growth plan, and it is now evaluating its cost structure for efficiency gains. Investors are weighing how long the Consumer channel drag persists before those initiatives take hold.
The company had been beating or meeting estimates through fiscal 2026, so this miss follows the Q4 2026 shortfall as a back-to-back stumble that complicates the bullish narrative heading into the new fiscal year.
