The FTSE 100 opened Friday's session up 0.18%, continuing a pattern of the index holding ground near multi-week highs after a more turbulent stretch earlier in the month.

The DAX opened lower by almost exactly the same proportion that London gained, meaning the two biggest markets in Europe are effectively trading as mirror images of each other rather than moving in lockstep as they often do.

The FTSE spent much of the past two weeks swinging sharply in both directions, and today's calm open sits near the middle of that range, suggesting the index has not yet committed to a clear directional break.

The CAC 40 in Paris is not yet reporting a move, leaving Frankfurt and London to tell the European story on their own for now. If the DAX's early weakness deepens through the morning session, it would add pressure on any pan-European funds that are benchmarked across all three indexes.
