The FTSE 100 ended the session at 14,372, a modest but meaningful gain that stands out precisely because it came on a day when continental Europe was clearly moving in the opposite direction.

Germany's DAX fell about 1% over the same session, and France's CAC 40 slipped as well. For investors who treat European equities as a single, interchangeable block, that divergence represented a meaningful cost by the close.

The FTSE spent much of the middle of the session chopping around flat or fractionally negative, touching its lows around the same window when the DAX was pressing its worst levels of the day, before recovering to close in positive territory. That resilience is what ultimately separated London from its continental peers.

For anyone with European exposure, UK-listed equities, which are heavily weighted toward energy, financials, and globally diversified consumer staples, can behave very differently from the more industrials-heavy German benchmark on any given day. A position that simply buys broad European index exposure blends those two return streams together, and on a day like this one, that blending came at a cost.
