The FTSE 100 added 22 points at the open on September 29, snapping a run of pressure that had pulled the index down from above 14,400 earlier in the month.
Frankfurt's DAX opened in step with London, also nudging higher by 0.1%, while Paris's CAC 40 slipped into the red as the lone major European index below its prior close.
The index spent the better part of two weeks grinding from above 14,400 down toward 14,100 before stabilising. Today's open holds above that 14,100 low, giving bulls a reference level to defend.
US futures had not yet opened when London rang in, so the European divergence between London and Paris is setting the early tone without a steer from Wall Street. How American markets open determines whether this cautious recovery holds.
