Lumen Technologies Q3 2026: AI Demand Lifts Strategic Revenue 9.6%
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on November 4, 2026.
Strategic revenue grew 9.6% to $1.28 billion on AI connectivity demand and now makes up 55% of business revenue, while legacy and the divested fiber-to-the-home unit drag total sales lower year over year. Management reiterated full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance, but shares slid after hours anyway.

Lumen's Q3 2026 earnings report delivered a meaningful beat on the profit line, with an adjusted loss of $0.14 per share beating expectations. The company has steadily closed the gap since its Q1 2026 miss, and Q3 marks the tightest loss in four quarters.
The clearest bright spot was Strategic revenue, which grew 9.6% year over year to $1.28 billion and now represents 55% of total business revenue. That growth is being driven by AI-related connectivity demand, with the company reporting a fivefold increase in installs from AI companies in new Waves and over 1,000% AI traffic growth on its backbone since April. CEO Kate Johnson credited customers choosing Lumen's platform to simplify their networks, and cumulative signed Private Connectivity Fabric deals have now surpassed $13.5 billion.
Total revenue of $2.71 billion came in below the $2.73 billion estimate, missing expectations, and fell roughly 12% year over year, largely because the Q1 2026 sale of the Mass Markets fiber-to-the-home business to AT&T carved 41.5% out of that segment. Legacy revenue also declined 17.2% year over year, underscoring that the turnaround depends entirely on whether Strategic growth can outpace those legacy headwinds fast enough.

Profitability metrics showed incremental progress beneath the surface. Adjusted EBITDA margins edged up 80 basis points to 26.3% as the higher-margin Strategic mix grew its share of the business. Free cash flow remained negative at $76 million for the quarter, with $269 million in PCF-related capital expenditure weighing on the result.
Management reiterated its full-year 2026 outlook, targeting adjusted EBITDA of $3.1 to $3.3 billion and a return to business revenue growth by 2028. The company is also pursuing $1 billion in annualized run-rate cost savings exiting 2027 and a multi-year leverage target of 3.0 to 3.5 times. Despite the reiterated guidance, shares slid after hours, suggesting investors remain focused on the pace of legacy decline and the timeline to sustained positive free cash flow.
