Revenue of $6.86 billion cleared estimates even as Marsh absorbed $144 million in Greensill litigation charges, so the underlying business outran a significant legal headwind.
Marsh Risk, the newly renamed flagship division, grew revenue 10%, offsetting a 6% revenue decline in Guy Carpenter, the reinsurance segment and the one clear soft spot in the quarter.
The brand transition from Marsh McLennan to Marsh was completed during the quarter, running alongside the Thrive efficiency program and McGriff integration costs. Adjusted operating income still rose 6% to $1.5 billion.
Marsh repurchased approximately 2.7 million shares for $500 million in Q3, so litigation and restructuring spending did not crowd out capital return.
Greensill charges have now reached $569 million year-to-date, so the litigation drag is not a one-quarter event. Operating cash flow has also declined year-to-date, a trend worth tracking even as earnings continue to beat expectations.
