Matson Q3 2026: China Service Drives an 11% EPS Beat and Bullish Q4 Outlook
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on November 4, 2026.
Matson's expedited China service is the whole story, lifting Ocean Transportation operating income 62.2% to $239.1 million. Management guided fourth-quarter consolidated operating income roughly 50% above the year-ago level, saying elevated transpacific rates hold into early 2027.

Matson posted third-quarter earnings per share of $6.96, clearing the Wall Street consensus of $6.27 by 11%, while revenue of $1.11 billion beat expectations and rose 26.5% from a year earlier. The beat extends the company's run to five consecutive quarters of clearing analyst expectations, a streak that reflects how durably its premium transpacific service has repriced relative to the broader container shipping market.
The China service accounts for almost all of the gain. Ocean Transportation operating income surged 62.2% to $239.1 million, lifting that segment's margin from a year earlier, when April 2025 tariff disruptions had depressed transpacific demand. China container volume itself grew 16.0%, and elevated freight rates compounded that volume gain into a substantial income lift. CEO Matt Cox credited the service's speed and reliability as key differentiators amid ongoing congestion at major Asia ports.
Domestic tradelanes were more subdued. Hawaii volume edged down 0.3% and Alaska slipped 4.8%, while Guam provided a modest offset with volume up 4.3%. The Logistics segment was a bright spot, with revenue climbing 37.3% on strong transportation brokerage activity, though the domestic ocean weakness and a lower SSAT terminal contribution of $7.4 million, down from $9.3 million a year ago, served as partial drags on the overall result.

The guidance investors will focus on is management's expectation that consolidated operating income in the fourth quarter of 2026 will come in roughly 50% above the $143.7 million earned in the same period last year. Cox said demand and elevated freight rates in the China service are expected to continue through year end and into early 2027, giving the outlook unusual visibility for a shipping company. Logistics operating income is guided modestly higher year over year as well.
One note of caution for modeling purposes: the fourth-quarter effective tax rate is expected to run at approximately 20%, compared with 5.2% in the year-ago quarter, which had benefited from an $18.5 million one-time tax adjustment. That comparison will weigh on net income growth even as operating income expands sharply. Matson also repurchased approximately 0.3 million shares for $59.8 million during the quarter, with roughly 3.1 million shares remaining under its buyback authorization as of September 30, 2026.
