Merchants Bancorp reported Q2 2026 earnings per share of $1.48, clearing the consensus estimate of $1.22 by roughly 21%. Revenue also edged past expectations, coming in at $182.2 million against an estimated $179.2 million. The results continued a recovery trend: after EPS bottomed out at $0.60 in Q2 2025, the bank has now beaten estimates in four of the last five quarters.

The headline driver was a dramatic improvement in credit quality. The provision for credit losses collapsed 83% year-over-year, reflecting a fifth consecutive quarter of declines in criticized loans — a closely watched indicator of borrower stress. That shrinking loss reserve freed up earnings that had been weighing on results throughout 2025, and tangible book value climbed to a record $39.93 per share.

Investors will want to watch whether criticized loans continue to fall and whether the provision stays low, or whether the 83% year-over-year drop simply reflects an unusually elevated comparison period from mid-2025. The record tangible book value provides a concrete floor to assess how the stock is priced relative to the underlying balance sheet.
