A narrow slice of technology names carried the entire index today: the S&P 500 added 16 points to close at 7,687.2 while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell and the Nasdaq Composite climbed.
An S&P gain driven by a narrow slice of the market tells a different story than one where industrials, financials, and consumer names are all participating. Today, they were not.
For investors with portfolios tilted toward value stocks or industrial sectors, the green close on the S&P offered little practical comfort. The rotation into tech pulled weight away from those corners of the market.
The S&P spent most of the session running as high as 0.5% before fading in the final stretch. Whether that late softening reflects profit-taking in tech leadership or something broader is the question heading into the next session.
