The S&P 500 settled at 7,746.41, a gain of about 0.35%, and that headline number masks a session where the broad index trailed the real action.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed roughly 1%, more than five times the Nasdaq Composite's gain of less than 0.2%. That kind of divergence points to deliberate rotation: investors were selling or sidelining growth-oriented names and putting money to work in older, more cyclical corners of the market.
Bank earnings did the heavy lifting for the Dow today. Financial stocks, which carry far more weight in the price-weighted Dow than in the S&P 500, benefited directly from results that cleared the bar, pulling the blue-chip index well ahead of its peers.
Investors concentrated in large-cap technology effectively sat out most of today's gains, so index-level moves are hiding where market leadership actually sits.
