The S&P 500 ended the session at 7,804.81, a loss of less than a tenth of a percent. That nearly flat finish masked a meaningful divide underneath it.

The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.49% while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.34%. That split, with large-cap tech weighing on the broader index as blue-chip industrials and financials advanced, signals a rotation in where investors put money.

Holders of a passive S&P 500 fund saw an uneventful day on paper, but the divergence between the Nasdaq and the Dow is the kind of move that quietly shifts sector weightings and changes which parts of a portfolio are doing the lifting.

The S&P spent the session in negative territory and never turned positive, so sellers held the upper hand even as buyers stepped in late.
