Microsoft has unveiled the Maia 300, its third in-house AI accelerator, with production scheduled to begin next year, extending one of the world's largest cloud operators' push into proprietary silicon.
For Nvidia, another hyperscaler deepening its own chip program is a meaningful signal. Each workload Microsoft runs on Maia 300 is a workload that does not require a purchase of Nvidia hardware, and the move to production makes that shift concrete.
The Maia line has been Microsoft's most direct effort to control the cost and availability of the AI compute underpinning its Azure cloud and its own internal AI products. A third generation reaching production scale suggests the earlier iterations delivered enough performance to justify continued investment.
Investors will be watching how quickly Microsoft can ramp Maia 300 at meaningful scale, and whether the chip's capabilities are broad enough to displace Nvidia silicon across AI training and inference workloads.
