National Bankshares earned $0.86 per diluted share in the third quarter of 2026, missing expectations, while revenue and net income both rose from a year ago.

Earning power is shifting underneath the EPS miss: net interest margin expanded 49 basis points year-over-year to 3.21%, the direct result of a portfolio restructuring completed in Q2 2026, when the Virginia lender repositioned low-yielding securities into higher-yielding mortgage-backed securities. Net interest income widened even as interest expense fell.

Credit quality held firm alongside that margin improvement, with nonaccrual loans shrinking to 0.03% of total loans and leaving little sign of stress in the loan book. Cash and equivalents grew sharply on a year-over-year basis.

CEO Lara E. Ramsey noted that year-to-date earnings increased more than 55% from the same period last year, and that higher yields on assets combined with reduced deposit costs have supported income growth throughout 2026. She pointed to continued loan repricing as the mechanism expected to sustain that trend.

Management's outlook for Q4 centers on two catalysts: further loan repricing at higher yields and securities paydowns and maturities that are expected to pay off short-term borrowings, with the Q2 restructuring's pre-tax loss expected to be recovered within 1.8 years. The trajectory of net interest margin into year-end is the key variable to monitor for this stock.
