Nutrien's third quarter of 2026 presented investors with a sharply divided picture. Revenue of $6.06 billion came in 7% ahead of the $5.67 billion consensus estimate and was up about 2% from a year ago, but adjusted earnings per share of $0.61 missed the $0.77 analyst estimate by more than 21%, making it the worst earnings-relative-to-expectations quarter in at least two years based on the recent EPS history.

Two specific forces drove the earnings shortfall. The effective tax rate surged to 40% in Q3, up from 26% in the same quarter a year earlier, the result of a shift in the geographic mix of earnings. Simultaneously, the Phosphate segment essentially stopped contributing: adjusted EBITDA for that business collapsed to just $8 million from $122 million a year ago, as surging sulfur costs pushed gross margin into negative territory. Nitrogen results were also dinged by $23 million in charges tied to the indefinite shutdown of Nutrien's Trinidad facility.

The results fed through to operating income, which fell 16.6% year over year, and net income, which dropped 37.2%. Cash and equivalents on the balance sheet stood at $919 million, up 47.3% from a year earlier, partly reflecting $1 billion in senior notes issued during the period. Nutrien also repurchased 3,205,631 shares for $231 million in Q3 alone, and a further 1,194,010 shares for $83 million through early November.

Looking ahead, the guidance picture is mixed. Nutrien trimmed its Retail adjusted EBITDA outlook to $1.72 to $1.85 billion from a prior range of $1.75 to $1.95 billion, citing weaker crop nutrient margins in Q3. Potash and nitrogen sales volume guidance was nudged higher, while phosphate volume guidance was lowered. The full-year effective tax rate on adjusted earnings was revised up to a range of 25.5% to 27%, from 24% to 26%.

The most significant overhang heading into Q4 is the impairment review. White Springs carries roughly $430 million in asset value and Trinidad roughly $760 million plus goodwill, putting combined carrying values subject to review at approximately $1.19 billion. Nutrien has flagged that Q4 will include impairment charges, severance, and shutdown costs tied to both facilities, with White Springs targeted for a full shutdown in Q2 2027. CEO Ken Seitz framed these moves as portfolio optimization steps intended to improve earnings quality and long-term free cash flow per share.
