NVIDIA, Nokia and Leading Telecom Operators Turn Networks Into Distributed Intelligence Platforms
Cell towers just became a new server market: T-Mobile has placed the world's first AI-RAN call on a live commercial network using Nokia's CUDA-accelerated software on NVIDIA's Aerial RAN Computer, with BT, Deutsche Telekom, Elisa and Orange lined up for trials. Nearly 20 operators globally have announced AI-RAN collaborations on that stack, with commercial services targeted for 2027.

T-Mobile has completed what NVIDIA describes as the world's first AI-RAN call on a live commercial network, using Nokia's CUDA-accelerated software running on NVIDIA's Aerial RAN Computer. That milestone shifts the conversation from lab demonstration to real-world proof, which is a meaningful threshold for any emerging hardware market.
The idea behind AI-RAN is that the radio equipment managing a cell tower can simultaneously run AI inference workloads, turning each tower into a distributed compute node. NVIDIA and Nokia are positioning this as a way for operators to serve AI models and applications closer to end users, without routing every request back to a centralized data center.
BT, Deutsche Telekom, Elisa and Orange are queued for trials, and nearly 20 operators globally have announced AI-RAN collaborations on the NVIDIA and Nokia stack. That breadth across markets and regulators beats a single-carrier deal.
Commercial services are targeted for 2027, which means the revenue opportunity for NVIDIA is still roughly a year out. For investors, the nearer-term signal to track is how quickly trial operators convert to deployment agreements and whether the 20-operator count continues to grow as results from the T-Mobile live network become available.
