Old Dominion Freight Line reported Q3 2026 GAAP diluted EPS of $1.65, beating expectations. That marks four consecutive quarters of beating consensus EPS.
The standout number is the 13.3% jump in LTL revenue per hundredweight, which powered virtually all of the top-line growth even as LTL tons per day were essentially flat, dipping just 0.1% year over year. That combination, higher prices on roughly the same volume, is a direct read on pricing discipline holding firm through a prolonged freight downturn.
The operating ratio tightened 280 basis points to 71.5%, as salaries, wages and benefits fell as a share of revenue. That cost structure funds the full-year capital expenditure plan for service center expansion, fleet investment, and technology.
September tonnage inflected: LTL tons per day turned positive year over year for the first time in the quarter, the first concrete evidence that freight demand is bending back after an extended soft stretch. CEO Marty Freeman noted that demand built sequentially through the quarter.
Old Dominion repurchased $400.6 million of its own shares in the first nine months of 2026 and declared a quarterly dividend. With the freight cycle turning, improving volume trends, disciplined pricing, and a tightening cost structure give the company operating leverage if demand keeps recovering into year-end.
