Orchid Island Capital reported a GAAP loss of $0.90 per share for Q3 2026, missing expectations by a wide margin. Net realized and unrealized losses on agency RMBS and derivative instruments overwhelmed otherwise improving interest income and pushed net income deep into negative territory.
The damage showed up directly in book value, which fell to $6.02 per share after dividends paid across the quarter. Revenue missed expectations and declined sharply from the same quarter a year ago, reflecting how quickly the earning asset base contracted as U.S. Treasury yields surged to levels not seen since the early 2000s.
CEO Robert E. Cauley described the environment as one of widespread deleveraging and forced selling across the agency RMBS market, with implied interest rate volatility spiking at the same time. Management responded by pushing hedge coverage to nearly 100% of funding and extending hedge duration rather than selling assets, a deliberate choice aimed at preserving book value recovery potential.
The leverage ratio expanded to 8.8x from 7.4x a year earlier, a direct consequence of book value falling faster than the asset base could be reduced. The company continued buying back stock during the period, repurchasing shares in Q3 and again in October, with authorization remaining for further repurchases.
Management held the monthly dividend at $0.10 per share, with the next payment scheduled for November 27. Cauley pointed to the majority of the portfolio now trading below par as a source of discount accretion, and said the company is comfortable with its positioning if market conditions have stabilized. Rate and spread behavior is the variable to track from here.
