Orion (OEC) Q3 2026: Revenue Beat Masks a Sharp Earnings Miss
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on November 4, 2026.
The earnings miss came with a cushion: roughly $17 million of net benefit from European emission allowance timing, so the underlying quarter was thinner than it looks. Management still tightened 2026 EBITDA guidance to $190 to $200 million and raised the midpoint, while net leverage climbed to 4.1x. A review of underperforming plants is now on the table.

Orion S.A. posted net sales of $472.8 million for the third quarter of 2026, beating the $445.96 million consensus estimate and up roughly 5% from the same period a year ago. Adjusted EPS of $0.03 came in well short of the $0.15 analyst forecast, missing expectations by a gap wide enough to raise immediate questions about the quality of the quarter's profitability.
A significant part of the answer lies in timing. Adjusted EBITDA of $66.8 million included an approximate $17 million net benefit from the issuance of European emission allowances in the quarter, which largely offset accruals recognized earlier in the year. Strip that out and the underlying earnings picture is thinner than the headline figure suggests, even as free cash flow of $46 million represented a sharp improvement from $1.9 million in the second quarter.
On the demand side, CEO Corning Painter acknowledged that moderating tire imports into North America and Europe have not yet produced a tangible recovery in local tire manufacturing, the core end market for Orion's Rubber Carbon Black segment. Rubber Carbon Black, which generated $306.4 million in revenue, faced 4% lower contract pricing and weaker volumes in the Americas and Asia Pacific. The Specialty Carbon Black segment, at $166.4 million, dealt with a 7% volume decline tied to polymer customer destocking across EMEA and the Americas.

Net leverage climbed to 4.1x, up from 3.7x at year-end 2025, adding a layer of financial pressure as management announced it is now evaluating its overall production network with a focus on underperforming assets, language that leaves open the possibility of facility closures or production cuts. The fourth quarter carries additional headwinds in the form of above-normal seasonal softness and a heavier-than-usual plant turnaround schedule.
Despite those pressures, management tightened its full-year 2026 Adjusted EBITDA guidance to a range of $190 million to $200 million and raised the midpoint, pointing to strong year-to-date results as the foundation. The company also expects to reduce full-year capital expenditures by $70 million and still generate positive free cash flow for the year. For 2027, Painter signaled an expectation of improved Adjusted EBITDA and an additional approximate $20 million capex reduction, with 2027 Rubber contract negotiations described as ongoing.
