Performance Food Group opened fiscal 2027 with adjusted earnings per share of $1.32, beating the consensus estimate. Revenue rose 5.5% from a year earlier, also coming in ahead of what Wall Street had expected.
Inside the quarter, the independent foodservice channel grew case volume 7.8%. That segment carries the highest margins in the business, and its expansion to 43% of Foodservice segment sales helped gross profit grow at a faster pace than overall revenue. The mix shift drove a 38% jump in net income.
CEO Scott McPherson pointed to efficiency initiatives as a key contributor alongside the volume gains, saying the team's execution "improved our profitability, driving gross margin expansion and double-digit Adjusted EBITDA and EPS growth in the quarter." He also acknowledged that the macroeconomic environment remains challenging but expressed confidence in the company's ability to continue taking market share through the rest of the fiscal year.

Looking at the broader earnings track record, the quarter snapped back from two consecutive misses in Q2 and Q4 of fiscal 2026, when reported EPS fell short of estimates. The Q1 2027 beat aligns more closely with the pattern seen in Q4 2025 and Q1 2026, both of which also cleared consensus.
Management kept its full-year fiscal 2027 targets intact, guiding for net sales of $72.5 billion to $73.0 billion. For the second quarter, the company expects net sales of $17.0 billion to $17.2 billion, giving investors a concrete near-term benchmark to measure against when results are reported.
