A 37% collapse in the retail mortgage pipeline left Primis EPS missing expectations, even as the top line cleared estimates. CEO Dennis Zember says the bank would have hit its return-on-assets target without the mortgage disruption, with vendor savings arriving in early 2027. Primis Financial reported Q3 2026 earnings of $0.35 per diluted share, missing expectations. A 37% contraction in the retail mortgage pipeline drove the shortfall, which CEO Dennis Zember said cost revenue compared with the prior quarter, and management believes the bank would otherwise have hit its 1.00% return-on-average-assets target.

Revenue of $49.2 million cleared analyst expectations even as it came in below the year-ago quarter, while net interest income rose and the net interest margin expanded, pointing to genuine improvement in the core lending business even as the mortgage segment weighed on overall results.

The Panacea Financial division, which serves medical professionals, posted 17% annualized loan growth, while mortgage warehouse loan balances climbed year over year and the digital deposit platform grew small business balances. Net income rose from a year ago and nonperforming assets improved over the same stretch.

Management flagged approximately $3.0 million in annualized cost savings from vendor consolidation expected to begin arriving in early 2027. Zember noted the bank is pursuing additional efficiencies, including through AI, to manage through the lower mortgage volume environment while preserving capacity to benefit when conditions recover.

Primis has had a choppy track record against consensus, swinging from a steep miss in Q4 2024 to a beat in Q3 2025 before missing again in Q4 2025 and Q2 2026. The Q3 2026 result continues that pattern, so the mortgage pipeline and margin trajectory heading into Q4 will matter significantly for whether the bank can rebuild credibility with the estimate.
