r/povertyfinance shows trade-downs hitting groceries, streaming, and beef at once
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on October 28, 2026.
Definitely stopped buying any "treats" when I grocery shop. It's now just the meat, fruits, and maybe pasta to get by. No more chips, cookies or other things of that nature. Going to probably cancel the Netflix soon too cause it's too much for how little I watch it.

A thread posted on October 28 by SuchEye4866 in r/povertyfinance asked users what they had recently downgraded because of rising prices, and across 96 comments the responses point one way: households are stopping purchases altogether.
The top comment, from FrozenRage1989, describes grocery trips stripped to meat, fruits, and pasta, with chips and cookies gone entirely and a Netflix cancellation described as likely imminent. Cancellation, not substitution, is the detail that matters for investors.

Twelve Tabs, One Thesis
Your Research Resets Every Morning
The quote page in one tab. Filings in another. A chart you rebuilt from scratch, a transcript you never went back and found, a screener whose settings you will redo next week. Nothing you built yesterday is still there.
AlphaSpace replaces all of it with one screen you arrange yourself. Earnings calendar, estimate versus actual, the call transcript, live news, your own charts, every panel wired to whatever ticker you click. Close the browser and it is all still sitting there tomorrow.

One commenter described switching from beef to ground pork, turkey, or whatever protein is on clearance, with steak not purchased at any point this year. Another gave up a gym membership, sold a car, and cut every non-essential. A third started riding a bike and took a second job, leaving no discretionary budget.
For streaming and consumer staples companies, the earnings line items to watch are subscription churn and protein mix. When the trade-down becomes a trade-out, volume losses hit differently than pricing pressure alone.
