Two investors backed AI software on the same date with the same $10,000, and three years later one held $113,804 while the other held $4,471.

Both companies operate in AI software, and both were plausible picks for anyone who believed in the thesis at the start of the period. The name on the trade determined the result.

Palantir's path was not a straight line upward, with the position dipping below its starting value at points along the way. An investor who sold during any of those drawdowns would have captured only a fraction of the eventual 1,038% gain.

C3.ai moved in the opposite direction over the full period despite occasional rallies that briefly lifted the position above its starting value. By the end of the three years, the $10,000 stake had contracted to $4,471.

Sector-level conviction and stock-level outcome are entirely separate questions. Believing AI software would matter turned out to be correct, but deciding which company to own is where the three-year journey split in two.
