Shanghai lost 105 points, 2.6%, and Hong Kong finished essentially where it started. That gap says mainland selling stayed onshore, so the usual read-across into Hong Kong names never arrived.

The Hang Seng finished the session nearly unchanged, closing at 3,246.72 after shedding less than a point from the prior close of 3,247.27. That kind of stillness at the close is worth noting precisely because the day's backdrop was not quiet.

The SSE Composite in Shanghai dropped 2.6%, a meaningful single-session decline for the mainland benchmark. When Shanghai sells off that sharply, Hong Kong-listed shares often follow, because many investors hold exposure across both markets and trim positions wherever liquidity is easiest.

That read-across never materialized on this session. The absence of spillover suggests the selling pressure on the mainland stayed contained to onshore accounts, the investors who can only access Shanghai-listed shares directly and cannot easily rotate into Hong Kong names.

For investors watching the region, the split outcome is the signal. A sharp mainland decline that leaves Hong Kong untouched points to a specific type of seller, one without a footprint in the Hong Kong market. Whether that containment holds in coming sessions is the question the chart will answer.
