SLR Investment reported net investment income of $0.33 per share for the third quarter of 2026, edging past the consensus estimate of $0.3248 by about 1.6%. Total investment income of $49.34 million also cleared the $48.93 million estimate, rising roughly 8.9% year over year. Those headline beats, modest as they are, matter most because they kept the quarterly distribution covered.

For income-focused BDC investors, the distribution coverage story is the main event. Net investment income of $0.33 per share exceeded the $0.31 quarterly distribution for a third consecutive quarter, a streak that provides some reassurance at a time when BDC payout sustainability is under heightened scrutiny. The company declared the same $0.31 distribution, with a record date of December 14 and a payment date of December 28, 2026.

The less comfortable part of the report is the NAV trajectory. Net asset value per share slipped to $17.83 from $18.00 at the end of June, pulled lower by net realized and unrealized losses of $10.20 million, or $0.19 per share. GAAP earnings landed at $0.14 per share as a result, well below the non-GAAP net investment income figure that tends to drive BDC valuations.

On the portfolio activity side, originations hit a record $575.10 million in the quarter, with 95% concentrated in specialty finance. Asset-Based Lending contributed $277.2 million of that total and Equipment Finance added $263.3 million. Net of repayments of $429.2 million, the portfolio grew by $145.9 million, though gross investment income still declined from $57.0 million a year earlier because the average income-producing portfolio was smaller over the period.

Management cited more than $850 million of available capital and expressed confidence that the specialty finance focus is well matched to a higher-for-longer rate environment, given that most holdings are first lien loans secured by liquid working capital assets. Two investments remain on non-accrual, representing 1.2% of the portfolio at fair value and 2.9% at cost. Near-term debt maturities, including $75 million due in December 2026 and $135 million due in January 2027, are worth monitoring alongside the NAV trend in coming quarters.
