SmartFinancial Q3 2026: A 14.6% EPS Beat With an Asterisk
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on October 19, 2026.
A $2.6 million tax benefit from purchased transferable energy tax credits did much of the work behind the 14.6% EPS beat, so the quality of the quarter rests on the $174 million of organic loan and lease growth instead. Net interest margin compressed 7 basis points to 3.45% as deposit costs climbed, and revenue landed a hair under consensus.

SmartFinancial posted adjusted earnings of $1.10 per share for Q3 2026, beating expectations, but a $2.6 million tax benefit tied to purchased transferable energy tax credits did significant work to get there. Investors taking that headline number at face value are overestimating the underlying earnings power of the business.
Organic loan and lease growth of $174 million and core deposit growth of $163 million both came in at double-digit annualized rates, showing that SmartBank's southeastern franchise is expanding its book.
Revenue of $57.53 million came in fractionally below estimates, and net interest margin compressed 7 basis points to 3.45% as deposit costs climbed. Funding costs for community banks remain worth tracking as the Federal Reserve's rate path develops.
Net income rose 36% year over year to $18.63 million even as total revenue declined 27.4% from the year-ago period, reflecting a reshaped earnings mix. Operating income also rose year over year, lending credibility to the bottom-line improvement beyond the tax item.
SmartFinancial opened a new full-service branch in Columbus, Georgia during the quarter, bringing its network to 43 locations across the Southeast. The company also flagged $453 million in fixed-rate loans yielding 4.98% that mature by the end of 2027, a repricing opportunity for net interest margin. Nonperforming assets edged up to 0.25% of total assets, a modest credit deterioration.
