Smithfield Foods Earnings Preview: Can It Defend Its Four-Beat Streak?

Smithfield Foods reports before the open on October 27, with consensus calling for $0.26 a share against last quarter's $0.62, one of the steeper quarter-over-quarter step-downs the stock has faced.
The company does carry genuine momentum into the report, having beaten earnings-per-share estimates in each of the last four quarters. That streak raises the bar for what the market will accept as a satisfactory outcome, since a fifth beat against a sharply reduced consensus is already table stakes.

Pork costs are a central pressure point this quarter. Input cost inflation in the pork supply chain directly compresses the margins that have historically allowed Smithfield to outperform modest expectations, so how management characterizes cost trends will matter as much as the headline number.
Shifts in China trade terms add another variable that the income statement alone will not fully capture. Changes in export access or tariff conditions reshape demand for domestic pork supply, so guidance commentary will show how Smithfield is positioning for that uncertainty.
