Southern Company reported Q3 2026 adjusted earnings of $1.94 per share, beating the consensus estimate of $1.71. Revenue came in at $8.84 billion, topping expectations and rising 13% from the same quarter a year earlier. The magnitude of the beat on both lines is notable for a regulated utility, a sector not typically associated with double-digit earnings surprises.

At Georgia Power, net income rose 22% to $1.52 billion on revenue growth of 18.6%. Total retail electricity sales across the system climbed 7.7%, or 3.5% on a weather-adjusted basis, with commercial sales up 10.1%. The company attributed the strength in part to surging demand from large commercial and industrial customers, with data centers called out explicitly as a driver.

Warmer weather added 15 cents to earnings per share compared with Q3 2025, while retail revenue impacts added 21 cents and retail sales growth contributed another 11 cents. Those tailwinds were partially offset by higher non-fuel operating and maintenance costs (negative 9 cents), rising interest expense and other charges (negative 11 cents), and share dilution (negative 9 cents). Southern Power also swung sharply higher, posting net income of $52 million versus just $3 million in the prior-year quarter.

The reported GAAP diluted EPS of $1.76 was lower than the adjusted $1.94 figure because the adjusted number excludes charges tied to Southern Power wind repowering, debt extinguishment losses, and a Nicor Gas capital investment disallowance from the Illinois Commerce Commission. Southern Power's wind repowering work is projected to continue through the third quarter of 2027, with roughly $100 million in remaining pre-tax costs expected in 2026 and $135 million in 2027.

Southern Company issued no updated full-year earnings guidance alongside the report. Management's earnings call at 1 PM ET on November 5 is where investors will probe the load-growth outlook, the pace of data center demand, and the trajectory of capital costs. CEO Chris Womack characterized Southeast growth as "unprecedented and transformational" and said the company believes it is well positioned to serve rising demand.
