Sunrun posted earnings per share of $0.56 for the third quarter of 2026, beating the $0.32 consensus estimate. Revenue came in at roughly $1.10 billion, topping the $805.7 million Wall Street estimate and rising 51.8% from the same period a year ago. Both beats were among the widest the company has delivered in recent quarters.

The top-line outperformance was driven overwhelmingly by a 134% jump in energy systems and product sales, which reached $546 million for the quarter. That surge traces back to a transaction structure Sunrun first entered in Q3 2025, in which certain storage systems are sold to third parties while the company retains the underlying customer relationships. Customer agreements and incentives revenue, the other major segment, grew a more modest 13% to $553 million.

The earnings figure carries important caveats. GAAP EPS was lifted by $164.3 million in other income, the bulk of which was a $152.9 million unrealized gain on derivatives. An income tax benefit of $45.2 million and a $66.3 million net loss attributable to noncontrolling interests also contributed to the bottom line. Investors should weigh those items when assessing the underlying earnings quality.

On the operational side, CEO Mary Powell highlighted that direct business installations rose 9% year over year and that the storage attachment rate hit 75%, described as the highest in the company's history. Sunrun also reported participating in three consecutive record-setting residential distributed power plant dispatch events in September and October, dispatching more than 430 MW in the most recent event.

The forward guidance picture was mixed. Management narrowed its full-year Cash Generation outlook to approximately $200 million, excluding safe harbor investments, which is the low end of the prior $200 million to $375 million range. Aggregate Subscriber Value guidance was similarly tightened to roughly $4.6 billion from a prior range of $4.6 billion to $4.9 billion. Management did say it expects stronger Cash Generation in the fourth quarter and pointed to a growth trajectory in installations as the year closes out.

Subscriber Additions fell 24% year over year, and the discount rate used to value new subscribers rose to 8.4% from 7.3%, reflecting higher project-level capital costs. Creation costs reflected in operating expenses doubled year over year, and Net Subscriber Value declined 28%. Those figures represent the key pressure points investors will likely focus on as they assess whether the revenue surge from system sales is sustainable alongside the company's longer-term subscriber economics.
