Synchrony Financial posted earnings of $2.68 per diluted share in Q3 2026, beating expectations for the sixth consecutive quarter. Revenue also came in above estimates, a gap wide enough to signal that analysts have consistently underestimated the business's earning power.
At a moment when card delinquencies are dominating financial news, Synchrony's net charge-off rate fell 37 basis points year over year to 4.79%, moving further below the company's own full-year ceiling of 5.5%. That improvement, sustained across six quarters of estimate beats, runs ahead of the broad consumer-credit anxiety currently in the market.
Purchase volume jumped 8% to $49.7 billion, with co-branded card volume leading the way. Growth was broad-based across all five sales platforms and skewed toward Gen Z and Millennial spenders, with double-digit gains in both discretionary and non-discretionary out-of-partner spending.
CEO Brian Doubles pointed to a record third-quarter spend level and highlighted the company's expanding presence in agentic commerce, including a new partnership with OpenAI and integration with Stripe for CareCredit financing at online checkout. Those investments are aimed at embedding Synchrony's products into digital wallets, payment processors, and AI-driven purchasing paths before those channels become mainstream.
For the full year, management guided to approximately $9.50 in earnings per diluted share alongside mid-single-digit loan receivables growth and a net charge-off rate below 5.5%. The company also returned $1.1 billion to shareholders through share repurchases in the quarter alone, with capacity remaining under its repurchase authorization as of September 30, 2026.
