Today's 0.8% gain in the S&P 500 is narrower than it looks: the Nasdaq Composite has added 1.52% while the Dow Jones Industrial Average is barely positive at 0.17%, leaving growth and technology stocks doing almost all of the heavy lifting.
That kind of divergence matters for anyone holding a broad index fund. A cap-weighted index like the S&P 500 tilts heavily toward its largest constituents, which are predominantly large-cap technology and growth names, so a tech-driven session tends to flatter the index more than the average stock inside it.
The index accelerated through midday after a tighter early range, giving the move a more durable look than the cautious open suggested.
With the Dow lagging so far behind, investors will want to see whether the afternoon session broadens the rally into more cyclical and value-oriented corners of the market, or whether the close reflects the same narrow, tech-led character the morning established.
