The Dow's 341-point drop did more than double the damage of the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, a split that points to old-economy names bearing the brunt with another Fed hike still on the table this year.

The S&P 500 settled at 7,798.06, and the Nasdaq Composite finished alongside it, each off less than 0.3%.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.66% against the S&P 500's 0.27% decline, a gap that puts the selling in older, more industrial corners of the market.

The prospect of another Federal Reserve rate hike this year sat behind the session's pressure. When rate-hike expectations linger, the heaviest-yielding, capital-intensive companies in the Dow draw more selling than the broader index.

For investors, the divergence between the Dow and the two other major indexes is the signal worth monitoring heading into the next session. If old-economy names keep lagging while tech holds firm, the market is pricing in a narrower path for rate relief than many expected.
