Tia Maria Is Now Half Built, and the Risk Calculus Just Changed
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on October 21, 2026.
Our Tia Maria project is reaching half completion this month, and significant goals have been achieved on different construction fronts. As planned, we have finished pre-stripping works at the La Tapada deposit to uncover areas where mineral can be extracted when we begin operations.
Tia Maria is the long-delayed Peruvian build that will decide whether the $170.8 billion miner grows into the next copper cycle, and management now puts it at the halfway mark with pre-stripping done. That shifts the timeline conversation from permitting risk to first production.

Tia Maria has spent years caught in permitting disputes and community opposition in southern Peru, making its construction milestone this month a genuine turning point for Southern Copper. Reaching the halfway mark shifts the story from whether the project gets built to when it starts producing copper, which is a materially different risk profile for investors.
The completion of pre-stripping works at the La Tapada deposit is a concrete operational step that prepares the deposit for extraction once operations begin. Ground-level progress like that is harder to reverse than a permitting timeline.
Southern Copper carries a market capitalization of $170.8 billion, and Tia Maria is the project most directly tied to whether that valuation is justified by future production growth or simply reflects the current asset base. A major greenfield mine coming online in the next copper demand cycle would represent a meaningful expansion of the company's output.
CEO German Larrea announced the milestone during the 2026 Q3 earnings report, giving it official management weight. The next markers to watch are further construction front completions and any first production target date, since those will frame how quickly Tia Maria contributes to the company's copper volumes.
