Travelers posted Q3 2026 earnings of $9.18 per diluted share, beating expectations, and revenue cleared expectations too. Shares still slipped after the filing, so investors were focused on what sits underneath the headline numbers.
Personal auto policies in force fell 9.2% year over year and homeowners policies in force dropped 6.8%, with catastrophe losses adding pressure. Shrinking policy counts in Personal Insurance raise questions about whether Travelers is ceding ground in the consumer market or intentionally trimming unprofitable risks.
The investment portfolio drove the beat with a record $1.098 billion in pre-tax net investment income, up 6% year over year on higher fixed income yields and a growing asset base. The consolidated combined ratio improved to 86.8%, and CEO Alan Schnitzer pointed to a core return on equity of 22.1% for the quarter.
Travelers returned $1.8 billion to shareholders during the quarter, mostly through share repurchases, with more capacity still remaining under board authorizations. Year-to-date buybacks have meaningfully supported per-share results throughout 2026.
Travelers has beaten estimates in each of the last eight reported quarters, so the market has largely priced in a beat, putting extra pressure on volume-sensitive metrics like policies in force to justify a positive reaction. Keep an eye on whether Personal Insurance shrinkage stabilizes in Q4.
