A $369.5 million goodwill writedown on the Hotels business just confirmed that search-traffic erosion is permanent, and both lines missed expectations alongside it. Management is cutting costs and steering TheFork's sale proceeds toward debt.

TripAdvisor's third quarter of fiscal 2026 landed well below what analysts had expected on every meaningful measure. Adjusted EPS of $0.37 missed expectations against a $0.45 consensus, while revenue of $436.4 million also came in missing expectations and was down 21.1% from the same quarter a year ago. Those headline misses, however, were almost secondary to what the filing disclosed beneath them.

The defining event of the quarter was a $369.5 million non-cash goodwill impairment charge against the Hotels and Other segment, a writedown that management attributed to sustained deterioration in that business and ongoing headwinds from changes in the search landscape. Goodwill impairments are accounting's way of admitting that an asset will never be worth what was originally paid for it, and a charge of this size signals that the structural damage to TripAdvisor's legacy hotel referral model is now considered permanent rather than cyclical. The GAAP net loss from continuing operations reached $316.9 million as a result.

Every segment posted a year-over-year revenue decline. The Hotels unit and Media and Advertising each fell 23%, and even Viator Experiences, now the majority of total revenue, slipped despite experience bookings rising. The Experiences segment's Adjusted EBITDA margin compressed as marketing spend climbed as a share of revenue.

On the restructuring front, management launched a plan on November 4 targeting roughly $40 million in annualized gross savings, focused on simplifying the Hotels and Other segment and redirecting resources toward Experiences. The effort is expected to cost between $15 million and $20 million in pre-tax charges, primarily severance, with most of that landing in Q4 2026. Separately, the sale of TheFork to American Express closed effective November 1 and generated approximately $741 million in net proceeds, which management intends to direct primarily toward long-term debt reduction.

Earnings results have grown increasingly inconsistent: TripAdvisor beat estimates handily in several quarters through 2025 but has struggled to hold that pattern into 2026, with Q1 2026 missing expectations at a loss of $0.11 against an estimate of negative $0.07, and Q3 now delivering the largest percentage miss in the trailing eight quarters. No explicit revenue or Adjusted EBITDA guidance was provided with the release.
