Intermodal revenue jumped 27%, enough to beat on both lines and extend the EPS beat streak to five straight quarters. Higher fuel prices weighed on the operating ratio, yet management still affirmed high-single-digit EPS growth for 2026, with CFO Jennifer Hamann retiring in early 2027 and the Norfolk Southern review still pending.

Union Pacific's adjusted diluted EPS of $3.53 for Q3 2026 beat expectations for the fifth consecutive quarter, with revenue also topping estimates and operating and net income both expanding year-over-year.

Intermodal drove the quarter, with revenue climbing 27% on carload growth and higher average revenue per car. Broad freight momentum supported the result, with core pricing gains running ahead of inflation. Operational efficiency records fell as well.

Average fuel prices rose 64% year-over-year, pushing fuel expense higher and weighing on the operating ratio. Management acknowledged that elevated fuel costs will continue to challenge operating ratio improvement, though it reaffirmed its 2026 outlook for high-single-digit reported EPS growth and maintained a $3.5 billion capital plan for the year.

Two significant items add complexity to the outlook beyond the income statement. CFO Jennifer Hamann announced her planned retirement in early 2027, creating a leadership transition at a pivotal moment. Separately, Union Pacific's proposed acquisition of Norfolk Southern, which would create what the company calls America's first transcontinental railroad, remains under review by the Surface Transportation Board, with acquisition-related costs already appearing as a GAAP drag and regulatory uncertainty still an open variable.

CEO Jim Vena framed the quarter as a demonstration of execution under volume pressure, stating the railroad safely delivered the service it sold to customers while efficiently handling 6% volume growth. The five-quarter EPS beat streak, paired with reaffirmed full-year guidance despite a mixed economic forecast, signals that management believes the underlying freight business retains momentum even as fuel costs and the pending merger keep the investment case from being straightforward.
