United Airlines Q3 2026: A Fuel Spike Snaps a Four-Quarter Winning Streak
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on October 20, 2026.
A 62% jump in fuel expense ended United's four-quarter streak of beating EPS estimates, with both lines missing expectations. Q4 guidance spans $0.50 to $1.50 a share, and management says Wall Street's fuel assumption is about $1.00 per share too optimistic.

United Airlines posted adjusted diluted EPS of $2.54 for Q3 2026, missing expectations and ending four consecutive quarters of beating Wall Street's earnings estimates. Revenue grew 17.4% year-over-year yet also came in slightly below estimates, the first quarter in over a year that both lines fell short.
Fuel drove the shortfall: fuel expense surged 62% year-over-year, compressing the adjusted pre-tax margin to 6.2% from 8.0% a year ago. Demand stayed broadly healthy across domestic, international, cargo, and loyalty revenue, so the cost side is the story for investors.
Q4 guidance of $0.50 to $1.50 in adjusted diluted EPS is a spread wide enough to signal genuine uncertainty, and the company warned that Wall Street's fuel cost assumptions are too optimistic. United projects Q4 revenue growth above 20% year-over-year, but the fuel wildcard makes that top-line strength hard to translate into earnings.
GAAP EPS of $3.14 ran above the adjusted figure because of net special credits driven largely by gains on aircraft sale-leaseback transactions. Those credits are not expected to recur and do not ease the fuel cost pressure heading into Q4.
