Universal Health Services beat on both lines for Q3 2026, with GAAP diluted EPS of $5.22 exceeding expectations on 5.3% revenue growth driven by acute care and behavioral health volume.
The beat masks real deterioration: EBITDA margin net of minority interest narrowed to 13.5% from 15.2% a year ago while revenue per adjusted admission fell at acute care same facilities. Volume is growing, earnings per patient are not.
One-time items delivered a net favorable pre-tax impact of roughly $21 million from Medicaid supplemental payments, partially offset by self-insurance reserves tied to the tentative Cumberland Hospital settlement. Operating income still fell 12.9% year over year, so the earnings pressure is real.

UHS completed its acquisition of Talkspace in August 2026, expanding into nationwide virtual behavioral health, and grew its behavioral health facility count to 388 from 345 a year ago. Buybacks cut the diluted share count, lifting per-share results.
