The FTSE 100 closed at 13,767, a meaningful single-day drawdown for any portfolio carrying significant UK equity exposure.
Losses ran above 1% at the open and a second wave of selling in the final stretch pushed the index to a 2.1% loss at the bell.
London did not fall in isolation. Paris closed down 2.2% and Frankfurt ended off 1.5%, so the pressure was broad across European blue chips.
