Valero Energy posted adjusted earnings of $23.90 per diluted share for Q3 2026, beating expectations, and it marks six consecutive quarters in which the company has topped Wall Street's EPS forecast.

Refining margins drove the quarter: margin per barrel of throughput rose to $39.24 from $13.14 a year earlier, effectively tripling in twelve months. That crack spread widening powered the Refining segment to $8.78 billion in operating income from $1.61 billion in Q3 2025.

The Renewable Diesel segment, operated through the Diamond Green Diesel joint venture, swung to a $353 million operating profit from a $28 million loss a year earlier. The Ethanol segment set a quarterly production record, and revenue grew 43.3% year over year, reflecting how broadly the margin environment shifted.

CEO Lane Riggs pointed to near-record refinery utilization rates and the completion of the St. Charles FCC Unit optimization project, which increases production capacity for higher-value products including alkylate and gasoline. Operating cash flow reached $6.93 billion for the quarter, giving the company substantial room to sustain its quarterly dividend.

Valero recorded pre-tax expenses related to a Port Arthur Refinery fire, and the company continues to carry costs tied to the decommissioning of its Benicia Refinery. Management flagged tariff and regulatory uncertainty, California legislative developments adverse to refining, and global geopolitical disruptions to crude markets. These are the variables to track as margins carry forward.
