Viking Therapeutics Q3 2026: $1.55 Loss Misses as Trial Spending Surges
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on October 28, 2026.
A September raise left $960 million in cash, which management says funds multiple Phase 3 readouts starting in 2027 plus early commercial buildout. That spending on the VANQUISH Phase 3 trials and the new oral SUNRISE program widened the quarterly loss, missing expectations.

Viking Therapeutics posted a net loss of $1.55 per share in Q3 2026, missing expectations as the company accelerated its clinical programs rather than conserving cash, with the bulk of spending directed at the VANQUISH Phase 3 trials of subcutaneous VK2735 and the newly launched SUNRISE Phase 3 program for an oral version of the same drug.
The SUNRISE-1 and SUNRISE-2 trials are testing once-daily oral VK2735 against placebo, and success would position VK2735 as the first oral dual GLP-1/GIP agonist to reach the market, a distinction management has emphasized as central to its commercial strategy alongside the subcutaneous formulation.
A September capital raise brought cash and equivalents to $960 million through concurrent common stock and convertible senior note offerings. Management says the runway carries VANQUISH-1 and VANQUISH-2 through their expected 2027 completion, advances VANQUISH extension studies into 2028, and begins building commercial infrastructure ahead of a VK2735 launch.

General and administrative expenses also rose, driven by legal and patent services, consulting costs, and compensation as the company expands its headcount toward a commercial organization. The total net loss widened to $183.2 million, with Viking reporting no product revenue, as expected for a company still entirely in the clinical stage.
The next concrete catalyst is the completion of the VK3019 single ascending dose study in Q4 2026, followed by a four-week multiple ascending dose study planned for the first quarter of 2027. VANQUISH trial readouts are expected through 2027, with extension study results in 2028, meaning the loss trajectory is unlikely to reverse until commercialization is materially closer.
