Topline data from the pivotal ECLIPSE 1 hepatitis delta trial is due in Q4, a binary event for a $2.0 billion company. Net loss narrowed to $96.3 million as a year-ago milestone expense rolled off, and cash funds operations into the second half of 2028.

Vir Biotechnology posted a GAAP loss of $0.57 per share in the third quarter of 2026, beating the consensus estimate of $0.7452. The improvement was driven in part by cost recoveries recognized under the Astellas and Norgine collaborations, and by the absence of a $75.0 million milestone expense tied to VIR-5525 first-in-human dosing that burdened the year-ago quarter. R&D expenses fell to $80.0 million from $151.5 million a year earlier as a result.

Reported revenue came in at negative $188,000, missing the $1.38 million consensus and falling 178.3% year over year, as license and collaboration revenue registered negative $200,000. For a clinical-stage company with no commercial products, the negative figure reflects how collaboration accounting can run in reverse when cost-sharing arrangements generate more reimbursable expense than recognized income. The net loss nonetheless narrowed substantially, to $96.3 million from $163.1 million a year earlier.

Topline data from the pivotal ECLIPSE 1 trial, which is testing the elebsiran and tobevibart combination in chronic hepatitis delta, are expected before the end of Q4 2026. CEO Marianne De Backer said the company looks forward to reporting those results as it pursues a therapy that can drive hepatitis delta virus to undetectable. ECLIPSE 2 and ECLIPSE 3 readouts are expected in Q1 2027, with all three trials forming a combined global filing package.

On the oncology side, VIR-5500, a PSMA-targeted therapy developed with Astellas, achieved proof of concept and received FDA Fast Track designation for late-line metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. Multiple pivotal trials are expected to begin in 2027. Separately, a collaboration with Gilead to develop novel dual-masked therapies against solid tumor antigens brought in $90.0 million in cash consideration, comprising a $65.0 million upfront payment and a $25.0 million equity investment at a 30% premium, with up to $1.74 billion in further milestones possible.

Vir's cash, equivalents, and investments are expected to fund operations into the second half of 2028, giving the company runway through its most critical near-term readouts. With ECLIPSE 1 results imminent for a company valued at roughly $2.0 billion, the upcoming data release is a binary event that will define the investment thesis well into next year.
