Western New England Bancorp's third quarter of 2026 was derailed by a $1.8 million commercial real estate charge-off tied to a borrower bankruptcy. That one-time credit hit pushed reported earnings per share down to $0.18, falling 25% short of the $0.24 consensus estimate — the bank's first meaningful earnings miss after back-to-back beats in Q1 and Q2 2026, when it delivered $0.26 and $0.24, respectively.
The underlying business told a different story. Revenue came in at $22.7 million, clearing the $19.5 million estimate by about 16%, with expanding net interest margins and loan growth driving the outperformance. That divergence between a solid top line and a disappointing bottom line is squarely the story of the quarter: the bank's core lending engine is generating more income, but the credit event overwhelmed that progress on a per-share basis.

The charge-off is the key variable for investors to track in coming quarters. If it represents an isolated credit problem rather than the start of broader deterioration in the commercial real estate book, the bank's underlying momentum — net interest margin expansion, loan growth, and a pattern of revenue beats — gives the earnings picture room to recover.
