Trump's "energy ceasefire" claim hits a wall as Zelensky sets conditions

As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on October 11, 2026.

A halt to strikes on Russian refineries is the biggest swing factor left in crude's risk premium, and Zelensky's "only if Russia does" caveat means it is not locked in. Oil and energy names move on whoever blinks next.

Trump announced what he called an immediate energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, but Zelensky's response stopped well short of a done deal: Ukraine will only pause strikes if Russia does the same.

That caveat matters enormously for energy markets. A halt to attacks on Russian oil infrastructure is the single biggest remaining swing factor in crude's risk premium, and Zelensky's conditional stance leaves that risk premium intact until Moscow moves first.

Neither side has confirmed a reciprocal commitment, so the ceasefire as described by Trump does not yet exist in any binding form.

For investors in energy equities or crude futures, the story is still open until Moscow confirms a pause.
