The U.S. grid waitlist is more than twice the size of the grid itself

As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on October 13, 2026.

Interconnection is the binding constraint on AI data-center buildouts, and the queue backlog puts a hard ceiling on how fast new power actually reaches the grid.

Hedgeye flagged on October 13 that the queue of projects waiting to connect to the U.S. electrical grid has grown to more than twice the total capacity of the grid that already exists.

For AI data-center developers, interconnection is now the binding constraint: getting a grid connection approved and energized sets the timeline, and the backlog makes that timeline deeply uncertain.

The queue creates a hard ceiling on how fast new power can actually reach the grid, and capital spending on data centers or generation assets does not change the pace at which that line moves.

Investors tracking AI infrastructure buildouts need to watch interconnection timelines as closely as construction schedules or equipment orders. A project that cannot get a grid connection on time is a project whose revenue timeline slips.
