Bank stocks are pricing in credit risk the reported numbers have not shown yet: the KBW Bank Index has shed 13% from its August all-time high over six straight down weeks, its longest losing streak since 2008.
That slide is running through a quarter that has otherwise shown solid loan growth.
The last comparable streak came as the financial crisis was already underway.
For bank shareholders, the open question is whether the market is front-running credit deterioration or overshooting on fear, and it is worth keeping a close eye on.
