Bitcoin and Gold Are Both Losing in 2026, and That's Never Happened Before

As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on October 25, 2026.

Both of the go-to hedges are sitting at the bottom of the 2026 leaderboard at the same time, a first, which means portfolios built on the standard safe-haven playbook are not getting the protection they paid for.

Bitcoin (-7.3%) and Gold (-7.5%) are the two worst performing major assets so far in 2026. This is something we haven't seen before in any calendar year. https://t.co/MkJ1Phtndl

Bitcoin and Gold are both down through late October 2026, making them the two worst-performing major assets on the leaderboard. Both sitting at the bottom of the rankings at the same time has not happened in any prior calendar year, according to Charlie Bilello.

These two assets are the most common building blocks of a safe-haven strategy, held precisely because they are expected to hold value when other parts of a portfolio struggle. Seeing them lead the losses together means the standard defensive playbook is not delivering the protection it was built to provide.

If neither Bitcoin nor Gold is absorbing the shock in 2026, investors who leaned on one or both as a hedge are exposed in a way their models did not anticipate. That is the gap worth watching as the year closes out.
