A five-quarter streak of beating consensus EPS ended here, and management cut full-year adjusted EPS guidance to $5.40 to $5.45 from $5.55 to $5.70 as project delays and cautious customer spending bit. Orders still grew 10% organically with book-to-bill at 106%, pointing to deferred demand, while Xylem plans to divest two businesses and collapse into three segments in January 2027.

Xylem posted adjusted EPS of $1.44 for the third quarter of 2026, missing expectations and ending a five-consecutive-quarter run of beating them. Revenue also fell short of what Wall Street had anticipated, held back by project timing delays and more cautious customer spending across key end markets.

The weakest spot was the Measurement and Control Solutions segment, where revenue dropped 16%, weighed down by project deferrals and divestiture impacts. Applied Water grew 9% organically, showing that the underlying demand picture is uneven.

Management responded by trimming its full-year 2026 guidance, with adjusted EPS now expected in the range of $5.40 to $5.45. CEO Matthew Pine framed the quarter as one of deliberate repositioning, saying the company is "moving with urgency to shape Xylem around the markets where our capabilities can deliver the greatest customer value and strongest long-term growth."

The order book offers some counterbalance to the near-term softness. Orders grew 10% organically, pushing the book-to-bill ratio to 106%, which signals that demand has been deferred. Whether that backlog converts on schedule is the central question for the next two quarters.

Looking further out, Xylem announced plans to divest two businesses, Applied Water International and Specialty Flow Control, and to reorganize from four segments into three, Treatment and Services, Flow Solutions, and Measurement and Analytics, beginning January 1, 2027. The restructuring is designed to sharpen strategic focus, with management also flagging increasing investment in high-growth verticals including data centers and microelectronics.
