Did LULU Beat Earnings? Q1 2025 Results
Lululemon posted a solid if unspectacular first quarter, edging past Wall Street estimates on both the top and bottom lines as international momentum helped offset softness in its home market. The athleisure retailer reported GAAP diluted EPS of $2.60, a narrow beat of the $2.59 consensus, while revenue of $2.37 billion grew 7.3% year over year and came in just ahead of expectations, landing at the high end of the company's own guidance range. The most telling dynamic beneath the headline numbers was a sharp geographic split: comparable sales fell 2% in the Americas while International comps rose 6%, with China Mainland revenue surging 21%. Gross margin expanded 60 basis points to 58.3%, though heavier investment in international expansion pushed SG&A higher and compressed operating margin by 110 basis points to 18.5%. Share repurchases, which totaled $430.40 million in the quarter, helped lift per-share earnings even as net income dipped to $314.57 million. Looking ahead, Lululemon guided Q2 revenue to $2.54 to $2.56 billion and maintained its full-year revenue outlook of $11.15 to $11.30 billion, though management cautioned that guidance does not account for potential tariff impacts, a caveat that weighed on investor sentiment despite the in-line results.
- International revenue increased 19% (20% constant dollar), driven by China Mainland growth of 21%
- Gross margin expanded 60 basis points to 58.3%
- Share repurchases of 1.4 million shares for $430.4 million drove EPS growth despite lower net income
- Comparable sales increased 1% total; international comparable sales up 6%
- Revenue growth at the high end of guidance
“In the first quarter, we achieved growth across channels, categories, and markets, including the U.S., reflecting the continued strength and agility of our business model. Additionally, guests responded well to the product innovations, newness, and brand activations we delivered around the world. As we navigate the dynamic macroenvironment, we intend to leverage our strong financial position and competitive advantages to play offense, while we continue to invest in the growth opportunities in front of us.”
