Revenue of $995.70 million edged past the $982.98 million consensus by 1.29%, though it reflected a 22.4% decline year-over-year, largely a function of prior-year comparisons inflated by non-recurring items. The more telling story was net interest income of $796.90 million, up 14.2% from a year ago and 4.0% sequentially, driven by $2.70 billion in average earning asset growth and a steady net interest margin of 3.53%. Commercial and industrial lending powered $1.50 billion of the quarter's $1.80 billion in total loan growth, while a deliberate shedding of $849.00 million in higher-cost deposits signaled management's shift toward funding quality over volume. Looking ahead, Western Alliance trimmed its HFI loan growth target to $5.00 billion and narrowed net interest income growth guidance to 12-14%, with roughly $150.00 million in share repurchases planned for the second half of 2026.

Key Takeaways

  • Strong C&I loan growth of $1.5 billion in the quarter driving $1.8 billion total HFI loan growth
  • Net interest income growth of 4.0% sequentially driven by $2.7 billion increase in average earning assets
  • Stable net interest margin at 3.53% supported by lower funding costs
  • Deposit optimization strategy reducing higher-cost deposits by $1.2 billion
  • Mortgage loan production of $16.2 billion, up 14% from prior quarter
  • Normalized net charge-offs at 0.37% after Q1 fraud-related charge-offs
  • Special mention loans declined 22% quarter-over-quarter

WAL Forward Guidance & Outlook

Western Alliance revised its 2026 outlook, now assuming a 25 basis point rate hike in September (previously assumed no rate cuts). HFI loan growth guidance was reduced to $5.0 billion (from $6.0 billion prior), and deposit growth was reduced to $6.0 billion (from $8.0 billion), reflecting a deliberate deposit optimization strategy to reduce funding costs. Net interest income growth was narrowed to 12-14% (from 11-14%). Non-interest income growth guidance was revised to 13-17% (from 20-25%). Non-interest expense excluding deposit costs is expected at $1,600-$1,650 million and deposit costs at $650-$700 million. CET1 is expected to remain approximately 11%. Net charge-offs guidance of 25-35 basis points was reiterated. Effective tax rate expected at approximately 19%. Management is prioritizing approximately $150 million in share repurchases for H2 2026 over incremental loan growth. Mortgage banking revenue is expected to be in line with Q2 for the next two quarters given the backup in rates.

“Western Alliance generated solid financial results in the second quarter, highlighted by strong, pre-provision net revenue, diversified and robust loan growth, the launch of our deposit optimization strategy, and stable asset quality. Earnings per share of $2.36, rose 6.3% from an adjusted EPS of $2.22 in the prior quarter. Our results were driven by quarterly HFI loan growth of $1.8 billion, which reflected ongoing momentum in our C&I businesses. Net interest income rose 4% from the prior quarter, primarily from a $2.7 billion increase in average earning assets, and benefitted from a stable net interest margin, which was supported by lower funding costs. Asset quality trends continue to improve. Special mention and classified accruing loans declined approximately 22% and 3.3%, respectively, while net charge-offs declined 2 basis points from the Q1 adjusted level to 0.37%. Tangible book value per share climbed 13.2% year-over-year to $63.24 and the CET1 ratio remained 11.0%, while our allowance for credit losses ratio increased 2 basis points to 0.89%.”
