Early recreational sales began on October 1 in Oregon, and there was some fear that dispensaries near the border with Washington would negatively affected by the new competition. According to Cannabis Benchmarks, the Washington shops experienced only slightly lower sales, probably due to their ability to sell edibles and other infused products. Oregon shops are not allowed to sell these items.

In the futures market, Cannabis Benchmarks noted:

[T]he ever-growing demand for cannabis continues to stretch thin even robust supplies. The dramatic increase in illicit outdoor grows on federal land in Colorado – a risky, difficult venture in a less than ideal climate for outdoor production – supports the assertion that legal producers – of which Colorado has over 1,200 licensed currently – are still struggling to produce enough supply to satisfy continually expanding local and national demand.
